Dear Editor,
Any registration of births or anyone desirous of obtaining a birth certificate will surely have to wait until God knows when because ten post offices in Guyana are without birth certificate application forms.
The discovery first raised its ugly head at the New Amsterdam Post Office. Upon visiting this office last week Tuesday, the situation was still the same from weeks gone by—no birth certificate forms. Something told me to call the other offices nationwide.
I called several post offices and found out that Bourda, Leonora, Mahaicony, Charlestown, Fort Wellington, Nigg, Rose Hall Town, Skeldon and Whim (inclusive of New Amsterdam) were all without birth certificate application forms. All answered by saying that they are clueless as to when they will have these forms again.
Of course time did not permit me to call all of the post offices in the country. Several post offices’ numbers were either disconnected or out of service. These included the Agricola, Melanie Damishana, Suddie and Wales Post Offices.
I tried to solicit a comment from the General Post Office (GPO) in Georgetown but the supervisor of the Stores Department was not in at the time.
I did get a photocopied application form from the General Register Office branch in Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam and submitted the application at the New Amsterdam Post Office. What is this country turning to? Frustration is at every corner you turn. What’s so hard about getting a few forms to apply for a birth certificate? What’s the deal with applying for certain documents in this country — like birth certificates, marriage certificates, and oh yes, the one that takes the cake — passports? Why is the process so tedious and tiresome?
Just what is going on?
