Dear Editor,
I think that most Guyanese would welcome and appreciate what could be referred to as another Jagdeo Initiative in deciding that there must be full consultations with the people before an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) is entered into between Guyana and the European Union.
The impact and long-term effects of the EPA could seriously affect our lives, welfare and prosperity, now and in the future, as well as those of our children and grandchildren.
The strategy and technique of the European Commission (EC) in insisting on individual agreements with members of CARICOM instead of the body as a whole portrays to us remnants of the old colonial policy of divide and rule, which has kept us underdeveloped and in poverty.
The EC also put us under pressure of an ultimatum to sign the agreements by a certain date or we will be faced with having our exports attracting high duties.
The European Union possesses enormous economic power and we are at a serious disadvantage as there is no level playing field, and we do not want to be re-colonized.
President Jagdeo in his views and concerns, which are shared by many other intellectuals in and around the region, should be fully supported by the people by taking part in the consultations on the implications of the EPA, and on what we feel is best for us.
