A 15-year-old third form student of Queen’s College has been remanded to prison after he was charged with robbery under arms and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
The accused made his appearance yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
It is alleged that on Thursday July 10, armed with a pistol, he robbed Rabindranauth Baijnauth of cash and other valuables. It is also alleged that on the same day he had in his possession one pistol without being a licensed firearm holder. The lad also had eight rounds of matching ammunition for the weapon.
The teen was represented by defense counsel Anil Nandlall and Euclin Gomes.
Nandlall, in making a bail application, told the court that his client is an ardent church goer and both he and his parents have strong ties with the church at the East Coast Demerara village where he lives.
According to Nandlall, his client’s parents who were present in court are willing to give all assurances that if released on bail he will return for his trial. Nandlall further told the Magistrate that his client is also prepared to present himself to the nearest police station at least twice a week, to show that he has no intention of fleeing the jurisdiction.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith did not object to bail, but noted that they were concerned about the accused interfering with the virtual complainant.
At that point the boy’s lawyer indicated that the likelihood of that happening is not possible since the virtual complainant lives in Georgetown and the accused lives on the East Coast, and now that school is closed the accused has no reason to be in the city. The lawyer further informed the court that his client was severely beaten while in police custody.
Despite Nandlall’s argument the Magistrate refused bail.
Meanwhile, the virtual complainant who was present in court related the incident to the Magistrate.
Baijnauth told the court that on the day in question the accused joined his taxi in the vicinity of the Central Immigration Office on Camp Road. According to Baijanuth, after the lad entered the car, he asked to be taken to Enterprise on the East Coast of Demerara.
“I tell he $2000 and he seh no problem so I stop and put in some gas and when we reach in front of Celina’s Resort he put a gun to me head and tell me hand over all me f***ing money,” Baijnauth recalled.
He added that after he handed over all his valuables, which included cash and his cellular phone, the lad attempted to escape.
“Your worship after he come out de car I know he put back de gun in he school bag so I decide fuh run behind he and call fuh help…he run and fall down and I run and sit down pon he till de police come fuh he,” Baijnauth told the court.
The accused is expected to make his next court appearance on July 18.
