A Mackenzie resident was shot dead on Sunday night allegedly during a heated row with another man over some stolen marijuana.
Twenty-six-year-old Paul Austin, a mason of Accabre Street, Kara Kara, Mackenzie was killed at around 21:00 hours in the vicinity of the Kara Kara bridge.
Police in a press release stated that investigations so far have revealed that Paul Austin was walking along the bridge in the company of another man when two men rode up on bicycles.
One of the suspects became engaged in an argument with Austin during which he is reported to have pulled out a firearm and discharged rounds which struck Austin, before they both escaped.
The police said that Paul Austin was taken to the Mackenzie Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Diligent investigative work by the police led to the recovery of an unlicensed .38 revolver with two live rounds and two spent shells along with a quantity of marijuana in an open field at Kara Kara.
The investigative work also led to the arrest of five men who are in police custody assisting with the investigations.
Kaieteur News understands that one of the suspects told investigators that the two men, both sporting dreadlocks, approached Austin and enquired from him where the stolen marijuana was.
The suspect said when Austin denied knowledge of the stolen weed he was shot dead.
However, further investigations implicated the suspect.
A source close to the investigation told this newspaper that they have unearthed evidence that the suspect was the person with whom Austin had an argument.
The source said that Austin and the suspect had raided a ganja field some 300 yards from the Kara Kara Public Road and had stolen about 35 pounds of dried marijuana.
The source said that an argument ensued between Austin and the suspect over the splitting of the loot and it was during this argument that the shooting occurred.
Investigations are continuing.
