Police at Lethem are seeking a group of ganja farmers who allegedly shot a councilor during a raid on their field on Sunday.
This newspaper understands that the councilor who was first taken to the Lethem Hospital was transferred to a medical facility in neighbouring Venezuela because of the extent of his injuries.
Police say they have recovered an improvised shotgun from the ganja field at Moco-Moco Farmland, about 14 miles from Lethem, which they suspect was used in the shooting. According to reports, the discovery of the marijuana field stemmed from a report of a stolen bicycle.
Kaieteur News was reliably informed that the owner of the bicycle reported the theft to the village captain who launched a search, which led to a field of marijuana plants.
While in the field, the village captain observed some men in a hut but left to get assistance with a view to destroying the field.
The village captain subsequently returned with some help including a councilor and began chopping down the plants. While doing so, gunshots rang out and the councilor was hit.
The party abandoned their field destruction exercise and took the injured councilor for medical attention.
The police were informed and they went to the area yesterday but found that all of the plants had been hurriedly harvested.
It is believed that in their haste to avoid being captured, the cultivators of the ganja field fled leaving the improvised shotgun behind.
A source told Kaieteur News that the men could still be in the area since they may not be able to travel far enough with all the marijuana that was harvested. Investigators are continuing.
