Herstelling acid attack… Defence calls last witness

The mother and son charged with the Herstelling acid attack are expected to know their fate soon.
The defence called their last witness yesterday.
Komal Persaud and his mother, Renee Persaud, of Third Street, Herstelling, East Bank Demerara are charged with attempting to murder Navin Seepersaud, or the alternative count of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
Seepersaud, of Section ‘C’, Block ‘Y’, Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, was badly scarred on the face, eyes, torso, thighs and legs on November 25, 2004.
The Persauds stand before Justice Roxanne George-Wiltshire and a 12-man jury at the High Court.
Justice Roxanne George-Wiltshire is expected to sum up the case for the jury’s consideration on Wednesday.
Yesterday morning, Dr. Sheik Ameer testified and defence counsel, Vic Puran, was scheduled to address the jury.
However, Justice George-Wiltshire told the members of the jury that a problem had arisen which required to do some research on procedures.
The matter has been adjourned to today when the Judge is to have discussions with both the defence and the prosecution.
This, she said, may have to be done in the absence of some or all of the members of the jury.
