Quick action by police on the West Coast of Demerara led to the arrest of two men who had allegedly stolen a mini bus from its owner early yesterday morning.
The men were apprehended with the stolen vehicle as they attempted to cross the Demerara Harbour Bridge. They were on their way to the city after relieving the owner of her property at her home at Lally Dam, Tuschen, East Bank, Essequibo.
Two other accomplices managed to escape.
This is the second time within 24 hours that the vehicle, BHH 2303, has been the centre of criminal activity.
On Saturday, passengers travelling in the bus were robbed by two gunmen at Agricola.
The gunmen also took away the keys for the vehicle, but the driver managed to get the vehicle restarted and took it home to the owner.
Yesterday, the owner of the route 32 mini bus was at home when four men in a car turned up at her home and said that they had come to repossess the vehicle.
The surprised owner reportedly told the men that the mini bus was fully paid for and she would not be handing over the bus.
With that, one of the men, who had a key to the mini bus, jumped into the vehicle, along with another accomplice, and forcibly drove it away.
The owner then contacted the police, who immediately sent out an all-stations message with a view to intercepting the stolen bus.
Not long after, the vehicle was spotted on the western side of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, where the police had been waiting.
This newspaper was told that the two men who were in the vehicle told investigators that they were sent by a man who resides in the United Kingdom and to whom the vehicle owner was indebted.
They claimed that the men had sent them to collect the outstanding money; and since they did not collect the cash, they resorted to seizing the mini bus.
But the mini bus owner has denied owing anybody, and has produced receipts to verify that she has fully paid for the bus.
The two men, aged 31 and 27 years, hail from Sophia and North Ruimveldt respectively.
Police are continuing their investigations and are expected to lay charges soon.
