Dear Editor,
When the President of Guyana announced that he was establishing a multi-agency task force to investigate bribery allegations at the Customs Department, he indicated that it was Fidelity Investments which had come forward with information.
At the same time, he said that the company committed a wrong and therefore had to face the consequences. The President also said that it was the Head of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) who had made him aware of the alleged racket.
Since then, we have heard versions that have cast a different complexion on this issue. Firstly, Fidelity Investments recently claimed that it never bribed any Customs officials. The Head of the GRA is also quoted in the press as accusing the company of being involved in corrupt activities, something that the company denies.
In light of all these accusations and counter accusations, where does the fate of the 17 Customs officers who were sent home stand? These officers were led to believe that it was the company that had made allegations against them. The company is, however, now saying that it was never part of any corruption.
If the company is now saying that it was never part of any corrupt act, then no credibility can be attached to the allegations against the Customs officers, since the very company that the President said came forward is now denying any such complicity.
The allegations against the officers are therefore without merit. The task force that has been established to investigate these allegations should now indicate to the President that, in light of recent developments, its mandate has become untenable. The officers should be reinstated.
