To the satisfaction of many parents, the students who had been thrown out of the Ann’s Grove Community High school have been ordered reinstated by the Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh.
According to the minister, come September, the students will be allowed to go back to school. In an invited comment on the issue, the minister said that the decision to throw students out of a school is against the policy of the Ministry of Education as well as the school’s policy.
Several parents had voiced their concerns, since their children were told by the head teacher of the Ann’s Grove Community High School not to return to the school.
The reason given for the decision was that the children failed twice in one class, and given the fact that they would have to repeat a third time, there would not be space for upcoming students.
This current decision has appeased many parents.
One parent said she now feels more at ease with the ministry’s intervention. Similar sentiments were expressed by several other parents.
The parents had complained about the fact that many of them were single parents and they could not afford to send their children to a private institution for further education.
They say they are now satisfied that their children will be given a second chance at education. The satisfied parents have given all assurances that they will make all efforts to ensure their children make the best of this second opportunity.
In the meantime, on the same issue, the Minister within the Education Ministry, Dr. Desrey Fox, said that following the complaints by the parents of the Ann’s Grove CHS, several other parents have come forward with similar complaints.
She said that the ministry will be carefully addressing the matter, since it is of great concern. Minister Fox reiterated that these decisions, which are taken by schools’ administrations, are not in keeping with the ministry’s literacy and numeracy objectives, and even the remedial programme offered.
“These students should not be left by the wayside; we have an obligation to offer the remedial programme, and it is for that reason that the programme was introduced,” Dr. Fox said.
As such, she said the ministry will be meeting the affected schools and parents to address the issue.
