Coach Wilson to implement late preparation cycle
By Franklin Wilson
With just over two weeks to go before the kick off of the Caribbean Football Union under-16 championship, the local squad commenced preparation in earnest yesterday at the Carifesta Sports Complex ground under the guidance of head coach Joseph Wilson.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport during the afternoon session, Wilson who has been coaching at various national levels over the years said while the time is short for the team to be fully prepared, he is happy that he was part of the FIFA Futuro 111 Coaches Workshop (Train the Trainers) where for the first time in his career, he was exposed to training on late preparation for teams.
“I hope to implement some of the things I learnt in Trinidad in terms of the late preparation cycle based on the tips we got which I did not know about for all these years on how to prepare a team in a short period of time.”
At the end of this week the squad will have their first practice game against a combination team from the East Coast to assess what would have been achieved over the period.
The players were evaluated on their level of fitness at the first session yesterday and Coach Wilson said they are over 60% based on his assessment. Some of the players he said were very fit but a few are back but he is expecting that they will improve greatly based on the level of work they will be exposed to over the coming days.
During the afternoon session, the players were evaluated on their technical capabilities and tactical awareness using a number of small sided games. After these two sessions Wilson said he would be able to formulate his work programme for remainder of their camp.
England based player Sachie Flemming is part of the squad which is expected to be strengthened with the inclusion of an American based player later this week.
Wilson stated that he always aims for success whenever he is coaching any team and this will be no different since they will take it stage by stage in Trinidad. He said he has a wealth of knowledge preparing teams at this level and will be bringing it to bear with this team.
“I can say for sure that most of these guys are talented and I can say so because myself along with my assistant coaches did the scouting when games were played against the various associations and we are satisfied that they can do a good job. It is now left to us to bring them to the required level in this period of time so that we could get them to produce the best football possible.”
At last years championship, Guyana advanced to the semi-finals, which was the best performance ever by a team at this level in the competition. The CFU championship kicks off on July 29 and concludes on August 11in the Twin Island Republic.
