Five symposia addressing Caribbean culture and arts will be hosted during Carifesta X, with focus on the region’s traditions being used as an avenue for economic development.
Speaking with the media yesterday at the Carifesta Secretariat, Professor Al Creighton said that the symposia will address topics such as visual arts, cultural industries, Caribbean philosophy, cultural diplomacy and artists in the Caribbean.
The grand opening for the symposia, he said, will be hosted on August 24, with the topic being, ‘Caribbean culture at a cross-road.’
An in-depth examination will be done on “where has Caribbean culture reached at the moment, and where is it going to go from here on,” according to Creighton.
This will be followed by a week of symposia on the issue.
On August 25, the symposium will deal with ‘Visual Arts.’
“It will be a symposium based on art and artists in the Caribbean. The focus will be on the visual arts. That same afternoon an ‘indigenous performance traditions’ discussion will be hosted,” Creighton said.
He pointed out that there will be a ‘very strong’ contingent of theatre people, researchers, and persons working in the area of indigenous traditions and indigenous performance arts during these symposia.
“They will be getting together to make a presentation on indigenous performance traditions.”
On August 26, ‘Cultural Industries’ will be the topic of discussion.
“One of the things about these symposia is that the focus issues are those in the Caribbean with regard to the arts and Caribbean culture. The focus is on burning issues which are very topical at present in the Caribbean as they relate to arts and culture.”
‘Artists as practitioners’ will come up on August 28 at the discussions.
Visual arts, the literary arts and the performing arts will be the focus of the dialogue.
“We are trying to pull together several artists of different persuasions, who will talk about their experiences and challenges as artists in the Caribbean.”
The very next day, August 29, ‘Caribbean philosophy’ will be the focal point.
For more than 100 years, Creighton said, Caribbean philosophy has been in existence.
“There have been many contributors in that area from ever since the turn of the century.
This particular symposium will focus on the topic: Is there such a thing as Caribbean philosophy? Is there a Caribbean nation? The speakers will address themselves to these issues.”
Meanwhile, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, yesterday said that all the plans for the mega-event are on stream.
He is, however, urging persons with foreign language skills to get registered with the secretariat in order to assist with the possible language barrier during the event.
Hosted under the theme: ‘One Caribbean, One Purpose, Our Culture, Our Life’, the tenth staging of CARIFESTA, will boast an impressive line-up of activities, including the opening and closing ceremonies; culinary, visual, literary and performing arts; community festivals, grand cultural markets, child/youth fora, symposia and workshops, as well as signal events and super concerts.
The festival is returning to Guyana for the second time in over thirty-five years, the first being in 1972, when CARIFESTA was born.
