A 23-year-old fireman has been hospitalized yesterday after suffering from electrical shock while fighting a blaze that destroyed the wooden upper-flat of a house at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, owned by Lalkoari Mansarin, 60.
Fireman Michael Sam, of La Grange, West Bank Demerara, was among several fighters who responded to the fire.
Kaieteur News understands that, in the process of fighting the fire, Sam came into contact with a live wire.
A police press release stated that investigations are being conducted into a fire of unknown origin that occurred at about 11:15hours yesterday, severely damaging the upper flat of a two-storey building at New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara.
According to the police, Mansarin and her daughter had gone to the market, leaving her grandchildren at home.
Neighbours later saw smoke coming from the upper section of the building and raised an alarm.
Guyana Fire Service personnel responded and extinguished the blaze, but by then the upper portion of the house was destroyed.
