Having endured an anxious wait to gain the selectors nod, Corentyne’s Delvin Maynard delivered a decisive spell of off-spin bowling that separated them from East Bank in the final of the Republic Bank Right Start 2007 Under-15 40-over Cricket Competition yesterday, at the Guyana National Stadium.
Maynard, who ended with the impressive figures of 6-20 off 7.3 tantalising overs totally befuddled the East Bank batsmen with his flight and guile to guide his team to a comfortable 62-run victory and the winners’ trophy and in the process picked up the coveted Man-of-the-Match award.
Set a victory target of 143, East Bank surprisingly offered little resistance against a well disciplined Corentyne attack focused mainly on spin and they crumbled for 80 in 32.3 overs with only opener Khemraj Singh, who hit a pedestrian 24 that lasted 79 balls displaying any fortitude.
He along with #4 batsman Mark Anthony, who made 11 off 52 balls, laboured in a sluggish 36 runs stand for the third wicket that effectively created a lot of pressure for the other batsmen as the run rate required increased.
Earlier, Pernell London went without scoring with the total on 15 and he was followed six runs after when Devindra Deosarran was magnificently run out by Veerapen Permaul, the first ball after the lunch break for 4.
Singh and Anthony batted painstakingly, pegged back by some accurate and teasing bowling from all the Corentyne’s slow bowlers led by Maynard.
However, Anthony was eventually deceived in the flight by Maynard and was comprehensively beaten and bowled.
Joshua Vantull, who has a reputation for being a big-hitter made his appearance at the crease and he too was bogged down by the wily Maynard.
East Bank lost another wicket that of Singh, who holed out to Pestano at mid-on off Maynard’s bowling.
Vickram Balkarran joined Vantull and the two added a further eight runs, before Maynard was once again in the fray, having his victim well caught by Sharmendra Hardyal at mid-off this time for a duck and the total on 73-6.
All this time, Vantull was kept in check and the required run rate ever increasing and he ultimately caused his own demise when he failed to respond quickly to a call for a single from his Captain Jagdesh Bishun and was found way short of his ground.
He went for a disappointing 8 and clearly any remote chance East Bank harboured of winning returned to the pavilion.
His dismissal brought Corwin Austin to the battlefield, but once again he too was tricked into thinking that he could reach to the pitch of the ball delivered by Maynard, instead offered a difficult return catch to the bowler who clutched it tightly with both hands.
That made them 77-7, before the next wicket fell that of Levon Beckles for no score caught by Lionel Lewis off Maynard.
Three more runs were added, before the match was finished with Kevon Gully left high and dry on nought.
First Nolan Hodge was leg before to Permaul for 3 and Bishun was cleverly stumped by the wicketkeeper to give Maynard his sixth wicket.
Corentyne stacked with four members of the national U-15 squad including openers Clinton Pestano and Dominique Rikkhi decided to take first strike and made 142 in 39.4 overs.
Andy Mohan hit a top-score of 30 with three boundaries, while Lloydel Lewis stroked a brave 18 after suffering a leg injury.
The two openers featured in an opening stand of 27, before the former was caught by Clevon Beckles off Devindra Deosarran’s bowling for 11 which contained two fours.
Andy Mohan then joined Rikkhi and after adding a further 21 runs, Rikkhi had his stumps disturbed by off-spinner Pernell London. He also went for 11.
Permaul came to partner Mohan, but with no addition to the total, he was run out for duck.
Hardyal and Mohan pushed the score to 59-4 when the former offered a return catch to London for 8.
Pint-sized Lloydel Lewis came next and showed admirable skills in taking the score to 96 along with Mohan, who eventually fell to Mark Anthony’s bowling via a return catch for 30.
The next five wickets fell for the addition of 46 runs with Sasenarine Ernest (2), Lionel Lewis (8), Gudakesh Motie (8), Shawn Perreira (8) and Maynard (5), all going cheaply. Lewis was left not out 18.
The pick of the bowlers for East Bank were Bishun 3-23 off 8 overs, London 2-18 off 8 and Deosarran 2-30.
Some 153 schools participated in the nationwide competition among 14 districts.
