Government has signed a million-dollars-per-month contract with Puran Brothers Disposal Service to truck garbage to a new landfill site at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.
The deal was inked on Thursday at the offices of the Ministry of Local Government, in Kingston. And, according to Government, the site at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara will significantly aid in the disposal of garbage, and the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development will institute adequate measures to ensure that the disposal is done in a manner that is safe to residents of the area.
Managing Director of Puran Brothers, Lakenauth Puran, signed the contract along with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Sewchand, in the presence of Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Kellawan Lall.
The project site is approximately 10 acres of old sugar cane lands located at the back of Lusignan. The eastern five acres of the site will be used temporarily for land-filling until the Haags Bosch Sanitary Landfill is ready.
The project, which was made public in June 2008, was approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It entails the collection of waste on East Coast Demerara from Monday to Saturday from 8:00h to 18:00h, and also on public holidays.
The contractor has the responsibility of ensuring security for the site and the workers.
The new landfill site, which will reduce the pressure at Le Repentir disposal site, will have a capacity of 16,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW).
According to Minister Lall, the project is a very important prospect, considering the complexities of the type and volume of waste. He further added that a lot of Guyanese have been inappropriately disposing of their garbage, which has been causing major problems for the drainage systems.
Lall urged citizens to dispose their garbage in a more acceptable manner.
Permanent Secretary Sewchand pointed out that $23M has been appropriated by the National Assembly for infrastructure in areas that will be updated to township status. These include Bartica, Parika, Supenaam and Charity.
There is also funding set aside under the Community Services Enhancement Programme (CSEP) to assist community participation.
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) caters for the general disposal of garbage at present at a cost above US$18M.
The Haags Bosch Sanitary Landfill site is expected to be in operation by 2009. Sewchand said that a feasibility study was already done at Le Repentir to have that site closed.
