Police have arrested the unlicensed driver who went into hiding on Tuesday after his niece was killed in a two-truck crash on the East Bank Demerara public road.
An official said that police, acting on information, arrested Richard Jhaman at a Soesdyke house at around 09:00 hrs yesterday.
He is being detained at the Timehri Police Station.
It is alleged that Jhaman, who is unlicensed, took his 11-year-old niece, Inaleema Jhaman, and her seven-year-old brother, Joshua, for a ride in his brother’s Canter truck in the vicinity of Coverden, East Bank Demerara.
However, he lost control of the vehicle after he crossed a bridge, and slammed into the back of a parked sand-truck.
His niece, who was sitting in the cab, sustained head injuries and died on the spot, while her brother suffered injuries to his arm.
Police say that Richard Jhaman fled without attempting to render assistance to the injured children.
Joshua Jhaman, the children’s father, said that he had bought the truck only three days before the tragedy occurred.
