The Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports (MCY&S) inter-block football competition which is being held in villages nationwide is set to kick off in the East Coast village of Buxton on Sunday.
According to coordinator, Parliamentary Secretary Steve Ninvalle, the Buxton competition will be played using the knock-out format and will see 8 teams vying for the Ministry’s trophy and a cash incentive.
He also disclosed that the MCY&S is bringing off this competition in association with the Buxton Youth Developers.
Given the privilege of opening on field action are Brush Dam and Annandale West, who will face off from 16:00hrs on Sunday at the Buxton Playfield.
The other teams in contention are Buxton Middle Walk, Vigilance, Friendship, Company Front, Friendship and Red Street.
Boxing Promoter Seon Bristol, who is based in the USA, has undertaken to present a special prize to the winning team.
Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, Permanent Secretary Keith Booker, Ninvalle and Presidential Advisor on Empowerment Odinga Lumumba, who is a native of Buxton, will all be present for Sunday’s opening.
Meanwhile, inter-block action is set to invade the West Demerara next weekend at the village of Pouderoyen. The 7 a-side tournament will be contested under lights.
