The driver of a Volkswagon suffered sever burns to both feet when his vehicle burst into flames after it overturned on the Strathspey Public Road, East Coast Demerara when it was clipped by another vehicle.
The driver, Michael Madramootoo, 36, of Mahaica, was rushed to the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital but the police had a difficult time locating him.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that around 16:30 hours, Madramootoo was proceeding west on a bend in the road when his car came into contact with another vehicle going in the opposite direction.
Madramootoo’s car was hurled on its side and skidded for a few yards before bursting into flames.
Several persons, upon seeing what was happening, rushed to help the stricken driver who was pinned in his vehicle.
The driver of the other vehicle, Kurt Eversley, of Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara told this newspaper that Madramootoo was speeding and while attempting to negotiate the curve in the road, lost control of his vehicle.
“He came into my lane, so I had to pull and just the front of my vehicle got damaged. When I looked back, that is when I saw that his vehicle had toppled. The vehicle caught afire and he was screaming. Myself and some other guys pulled him out,” Eversley said.
His story, though, differs from what an eyewitness told this newspaper.
One eyewitness said that it was Eversley who overtook another vehicle on the turn and clipped Madramootoo’s car.
“De man overtake a car on the turn and lash that li’l car and skid and come here. He (Eversley) claiming that he right, but he wrong,” the eyewitness told this newspaper.
Police have detained Eversley as investigations into the matter continue.
