Principal Magistrate, Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday remanded Sean Matthews to prison for unlawfully wounding Clive Lynch, his sister’s boyfriend, on July 3, last.
To the charge Matthews pleaded not guilty.
Matthews told the court that on the day in question he was about to render assistance to his ailing mother when his sister and her boyfriend prevented him from doing so. He said that in frustration he attacked them.
However Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith told the court that Matthews was in the habit of ‘playing he does trip out’ and attacking his family members. She told the court that this incident was not the first since the accused was before the court for a similar incident in which he wounded his sister.
On that occasion he was spared after his sister asked that the police give him a warning.
Because of the precedence, Griffith objected to bail.
Matthews’s sister confirmed what the court was told and added that she is now fearful for her life. She said that her brother was in the habit of ‘smoking herbs’ and attacking her.
She said that now that the attacks have become more violent, she wants her brother to be penalized for his actions since she no longer feels safe around him.
Magistrate Robertson-Ogle acquiesced and ordered that Matthews be remanded until July 17.
Also yesterday Magistrate Robertson-Ogle remanded a 17-year-old after he too was charged with unlawful wounding.
George Mootoo, the teen, is accused of wounding Marlon Marks on July 4 last. To the charge Mootoo pleaded not guilty.
Leading his own defence, Mootoo told the court that Marks was asked to leave his premises but he refused and the two ended up in a scuffle. He told the court that it was Marks who invited him to fight. Mootoo added that during the scuffle an ice pick fell out of Marks’s pocket and he stabbed him with his own ice pick.
However, Marks told the court that he went to visit his niece who lives in the same yard as Mootoo. Upon arriving he said Mootoo told him that he was not welcome there.
“After he tell me that, I said if you ain’t want me here you put me out and he break a Guinness bottle and run towards me,” Marks said.
He added that Mootoo’s mother then ran and held onto him while Mootoo ran into his house and upon returning, stabbed him with a pointed weapon. His account of the incident was validated by Police Prosecution Denise Griffith.
Mootoo was refused bail. He is expected to make his next court appearance on July 17.
