Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh, has said that 25 schools across Guyana will soon have the technical, vocational programme in place, which was established to assist students who are not performing their utmost best in the literacy world.
Minister Baksh was at the time responding to an editorial that appeared in Wednesday’s edition of the Kaieteur News.
According to the Education Minister, the structure of the Grade Six is not a ‘one off’ thing.
He explained that it is an assessment system that was introduced so as to conduct continuous evaluation of students in order to ensure that children accelerate in literacy and numeracy.
The Minister said that remedial works are also being introduced in schools along with new methods of literacy so as to make certain that children learn to read and write.
Retired teachers who are now working with the Ministry have been mandated to work along with those students who have a low performance rate in school.
According to Minister Baksh, this is to ensure that these students move up to an acceptable standard in society.
For out of school youths, an alternative pathway has been introduced by the Education Ministry so that they can acquire other skills.
He alluded to the technical and vocational programme which, he noted, provides a wide range of training in various areas for out of school youths.
This programme, Minister Baksh says, will be expanded every year, since the administration is committed to providing the necessary equipment required to get the job done.
