Speedboat operators plying the Georgetown and Vreed-en-Hoop stellings are pushing for a fare increase due to the current price for fuel and the high cost of living.
The fare was scheduled to be raised since June 23, but this never materialized because the Speedboat Association never received the permission from the Transport and Harbors Department to increase the fare.
Although the fare remained the same, a sign was still up at the two stellings informing passengers of a fare increase.
However, persons did not know that the speedboat operators did not receive any permission to raise the fare and paid $100 instead of $80 to and from Georgetown.
A speedboat operator who declined to be identified told this newspaper that the time has come for the fare to be increased, taking into consideration the high price for fuel.
There are approximately 50 boats operating the Vreed-en-Hoop/Georgetown route and each has to pay $1,440 everyday to the Transport and Harbors Department.
The speedboat operator said that the last fare increase was close to eight years ago and urged for the Harbours Department to take the situation seriously.
He added that several letters have been written and sent to the officials at the department requesting permission for a fare increase, but so far the Speed Boat Association has not received an official response.
As it is currently, persons using the speed boats are paying an increase despite no permission being granted by the Transport and Harbors Department.
Meanwhile, this newspaper tried to contact the General Manager of the Transport and Harbours Department, Karen Bowen, to find out whether or not permission will be granted to the Speedboat Association for an increase, but Kaieteur News was informed that she was in a meeting.
