Young Achievers Captain Randy Adams has been chosen to lead a strong 13-man national team which leaves today for a friendly tour of Barbados.
The tour organised by the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) to reward the players who were in training in anticipation that Guyana receive permission to participate in the upcoming Caribbean Volleyball Championships will see the Guyanese play friendly matches against Barbados and some of the other teams attending the tournament.
Guyana which have been grouped in the South American Volleyball Federation (CSV) was hoping that they be allowed to play in the Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) sanctioned event, but unfortunately the Organisers indicated that they could not accommodate them due to member countries satisfying the quota required.
However, because of the urgent need to gain valuable ranking points and to test its ability against the regional powerhouses, the GVF decided to make a request to the Barbados Federation to facilitate some warm-up matches and they duly consented.
The full squad is: Randy Adams (Captain). Adolf Davis (Vice-Captain), Christopher Ramsundar, Ian Wills, Corwyn Richards, Denzil Klass, Dexter Hoppie, Kapil Samaroo, Kevin Vieira, Khemraj Singh, Michael Trapp, Rajendra Kuraf and Ranson Bostwick.
The Coach is Devendra Samaroo, while Trevor Smith will serve as Manager/Assistant Coach.
Meanwhile, President of the GVF Lenox Shuffler disclosed to Kaieteur Sport that the main objective is to expose Guyana within the CAZOVA Group.
“We would like to establish links with other Caribbean territories, especially with the inaugural Caribbean Games scheduled for next year in Trinidad and Tobago,” Shuffler said.
He added that the matches are all part of solidifying Guyana’s chances of participating at the Games next year.
“After holding talks with the Regional President, I am convinced that there is some amount of sympathy and support for us to re-enter the Caribbean Zone.”
The team is expected to return on July 15.
Shuffler extended thanks to the following entities for their support in making the trip possible: Ansa McAl, GT&T Cellink Plus, Toucan Industries, Nigel’s Supermarket, Scotia Bank, John Fernandes Ltd, Automotive Art and J.R Burgers.
