Former World #27 Nicolette Fernandes in an interview with Kaieteur Sport after returning from St. Lucia where she won the Suburu Open Squash Tournament said that her success was just another positive step on the road to regaining a top spot in the international rankings.
Fernandes, who suffered a knee injury that forced her out of competition for over one year has produced some very encouraging results since returning to competitive Squash after enduring an extensive period of rehabilitation under the guidance of Coach Carl Ince.
The Guyanese star who has since dropped to #226 in the world rankings revealed that even though she does not feel quite ready for the top level as yet, every positive result strengthens her resolve to get back to the highest level of the game
“As I’ve said before, I know that I’m not quite ready now, I still have some more time to get back to where I was, but we are doing the right things and hopefully I’ll be ready sooner rather than later,” Fernandes informed.
Commenting on her current fitness, she informed that it is still not where she would like it to be, but was not too bothered since she is taking it one day at a time to gradually improve that aspect.
She informed that she is back in training, doing all the things she had done prior to the Guyana National Open Tournament.
In reference to the St. Lucia event, the Caribbean Squash Star said that she was a bit disappointed with the turnout this year which saw only four Ladies entered in the competition that was reduced even further to three after one of the competitors subsequently withdrew.
Fernandes added that she knew all along that Karen Meakins would have provided the sternest test for her and avenging the earlier loss was foremost in her mind.
“Like any loss, you want to avenge it and I’m happy that I got the opportunity to do just that.”
The Queen of Caribbean Squash said that there are no immediate plans to enter any tournament, but she is just happy to be back and training.
