The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce in a statement last evening expressed surprise at the unilateralism by the Guyana Mini Bus Association in imposing fare increases on the public at this time.
These increases, the ministry noted, were not sanctioned by the Government though there might have been some inclination to examine an adjustment to mini bus fares.
The release further indicated that at present, the Ministry is studying several proposals coming out of meetings between Minister Maniram Prashad and members of the Association.
Government, it pointed out, has over time made specific interventions to reduce the impact of rising fuel prices by zero-rating the excise tax on diesel from 25 percent and reducing the excise tax on gasoline from 50 percent to 7 percent.
Minister Prashad had argued that mini bus fares should not be increased because the price for gasoline remains below $1000, the statement concluded.
