Even as efforts are being made to improve the supply of potable water to the city, Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), Mr Karan Singh, says that a sustainable supply during Carifesta X will be dependent on the service offered by the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL).
Singh revealed that, while the GWI has not been directly involved in the preparation of the upcoming event, he is optimistic that the water entity will be more than capable of providing a sustainable supply.
At the moment, he disclosed, a satisfactory service is available, and he expressed optimism that, without electrical interruptions, GWI will be able to live up to the expectations of Guyanese during the cultural event.
Last year, the company was able to procure and install two generators, valued at US$176,000 (approx.G$35.2 million), in order to guard against power failures, which could result in the incapacitation of normal water supply.
The acquisition of the 625KVA generators was funded by the Inter-American Development Bank and had taken a period of six weeks to be installed at the water company’s Shelter Belt Treatment Plant at Vlissengen Road.
GWI’s improvement plan had come in the wake of an electrical problem which had developed at its treatment plant, causing a disruption in the city’s water supply.
The resulting problem was reportedly caused by a malfunctioning GPL transformer. However, GWI has remained very dependent on GPL to aid its regular supply of water.
Chief Executive Officer of GPL, Mr Bharat Dindial, in an invited comment yesterday, said that while he is hoping that all goes well during the special event, he is in no position to make any guarantees.
According to him, there are currently staffers of the power company that are working along with a Carifesta X Committee with the view of setting things right for Guyana’s hosting of the event.
He, nonetheless, noted that officials at the Ministry of Tourism would be in a better position to address Guyana’s electrical preparedness for the event.
GPL has recently revealed that, in order for it to provide a stable supply of electricity, it requires the support of consumers.
According to GPL, the price of fuel on the international market has continued to rise at an alarming rate, thus pressuring its procurement of approximately 3,000 barrels of heavy fuel oil and diesel to generate electricity daily.
As a result, GPL noted, the situation demands that consumers do more to help the entity survive the crisis.
Currently, the GPL claims to have approximately 120,000 domestic customers, and advocates that each household switch off one 10-watt bulb during the peak period of supply to reduce the company’s need to generate about 1.4 megawatts of power.
