…recommits to construction of centre for the homeless
Venezuela’s Ambassador to Guyana, the Honourable Dario Morandy, on the 197th anniversary of his country’s independence, has announced that Venezuela has proposed the construction of a gas pipeline to run though Guyana to Suriname as a contribution to end the existing differences and guarantee the supply of the necessary gas to Guyana and Suriname.
This, according to Morandy, is part of the discussions on issues of bilateral cooperation, and it is expected that in the medium term the project would become a reality, and with it stronger ties of integration and economic sovereignty.
Morandy made the announcement at Le Meridien hotel in the presence of Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, who is performing the duties of President, and several leading local politicians and Venezuelan diplomats.
He also recommitted to the long awaited $400M centre for the homeless, which has been in train for some time now.
Morandy added that his country was still working towards the integration of the people of Latin America and the Caribbean and to renew bilateral relations with Guyana. This has made possible the identification of areas of common interest to both countries, such as energy, social, and cultural programmes and communication.
In illustrating his commitment, he noted that that is how, in May last year, the Venezuelan Government initiated, under the Petrocaribe Energy Cooperation Accord, the supply of 50 per cent of the fuel consumed by Guyana.
He also alluded to the gesture in May of the current year, where President Chavez cancelled Guyana’s debt of US$12.5M to Venezuela, accruing since 1974.
“We hope that this decision will grant the Guyana Government greater freedom in its financial relations with the multilateral organizations.”
Prime Minister Hinds told media operatives, following the announcement of the gas pipeline, that the proposal was a welcome one, but a feasibility study would have to be conducted.
He noted that an optimistic view would suggest that it would mean that Guyana would have a cheaper source of gas at its disposal.
He told the Venezuelans who were celebrating their Independence that this day (yesterday) symbolizes not only the birth of the independent nation of Venezuela, but also the celebration of the dreams and aspirations of the regional hero Simon Bolivar, for a free and independent hemisphere.
“The Association of Caribbean States and now the Union of South American Nations provide both Guyana and Venezuela with the opportunity to work collectively with other Caribbean and Latin American countries in pursuit of this objective,” Hinds added.
According to him, Guyana is now benefiting from the Petrocaribe Agreement and attaches great importance to the initiatives both within the Caribbean sub-region and the wider hemisphere, to achieve energy security.
He also said that at the bilateral level, Guyana hopes that the High Level Bilateral Commission could provide the impetus for an improved programme of functional cooperation.
