New Amsterdam/Canje district started the quest for championship honours in the Republic Bank Right Start Secondary School Under-15, 40 over cricket competition with a 160-run trashing of a hapless West Berbice/Mahaica combination to book their place in the national quarter-final of the competition.
In their game which was played on Friday at the Port Mourant Community Centre ground because of the unavailability of any other suitable venue in the New Amsterdam Canje area, West Berbice won the toss and asked the host to take first strike.
The host accepted the generosity of the visitors to plunder 212-6 in their 40 overs. They has a decent start from openers Jermain John (44) and Tryon Henry (14) as they posted 61 for the first wicket in 14 overs, John and Flint Reid (19) then put tougher another 35 for the second, to leave the score at 92-2 before they had a mini collapse to be at 126-4. However West Berbice joy was short lived as Khemraj Rampersaud with an unbeaten 37 and Davendra Jainabi 33 hammered 85 for the 5th wicket to steer New Amsterdam/Canje to their eventual score.
Bowling for West Berbice/Mahaica off spinner Kurt Griffith picked up 3-26, while leg spinner Patrick Reid had 2.
The visitors in reply were bundled out for a dismal 52 all out in 14.3 in a woeful batting display, this was after their openers had put together 20 for the first wicket. Doing the damage for the New Amsterdam/Canje line up were pacers Derick Cadogan (2-7) and Kareem Hinds (2-23) and Leg spinner Khemraj Rampersaud, who crown a fine all round performance with 2-9.
The competition was expected to continue over the weekend with New Amsterdam/Canje opposing neighbours Corentyne in what was expected to be an exciting encounter at the Port Mourant ground for the a place in the National semi-finals which is set for Tuesday at the national Stadium with the finals billed for Wednesday at the same venue.
