The Guyana Public Transportation Association (GPTA) has released a new minibus fare structure, which will come into effect from tomorrow. The move has been approved by both Nicholas Nnami, the President of the GPTA, and Lyon Weithers, the President of the General Minibus Association of Guyana.
The increases have been deemed necessary in light of the increasing costs of fuel and spare parts. Nnami explained: “While we strongly sympathize with the general public, there is little we can do to assist in this area at present.”
He went on to explain that gasoline costs more than $1000 per gallon, and the increase would allow the transportation industry to survive.
Members of the public are not overly pleased with the increase, as a regular minibus traveller told this newspaper, “Prices gone up and up again. Everything gone up! Now de bus price raise, too. Them should raise me salary, too.”
While the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Commerce has apparently been made aware of the move by the GPTA to increase the minibus fare, the ministry has not necessarily authorised it. According to Nnami, the GPTA met with the Minister of Trade, Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad, and they informed him of their move, after presenting him with the relevant documents and paperwork.
The minister was apparently given a deadline of Thursday, July 3, by which to respond and make contact with the GPTA.
Nnami said that no contact was made by the minister with the GPTA, and as such minibus operators will go ahead with the fare increase.
The new minibus fare structure has affected almost all bus routes, but notably the fare for short drops has risen from $60 to $80. Children will be asked to pay half-fare. Copies of the new minibus fare structure should be on display in minibuses, as these have been distributed to various minibus operators.
