DEAR EDITOR,
Finally, the Honourable Mayor and his group of councillors from the City of Georgetown have decided to clean the mess at City Hall. I guess the old adage of ‘Better Late Than Never’ can be applied here.
Commendable though it is that the Council took the bold and necessary step of relieving two senior officers of their duties for obvious gross dereliction and considerable financial mismanagement, I hope that this is not where it ends, but rather just the beginning of a thorough sanitisation process that will see the removal of all of the officers that are guilty of corruption, incompetence and lack of concern for the citizens whom they are being paid to serve.
I would like to suggest to the Mayor, to help him and his Council with the process of identifying their staffers who are involved in various forms of malpractices and irregularities, that a forum be set up through which citizens can present either verbally or in writing experiences or incidents, where they were subjected to demands for bribes, shake downs and other forms of harassment.
I am sure many vendors and even some store owners would have interesting things to submit about the Constabulary. I am confident many property owners who were required to have their building plans approved would have quite a few important revelations.
I am sure garbage and other contractors will have a thing or two to say about what happens when the time comes for them to be paid, and not to mention stall holders who require a transfer of ownership of their stalls.
Come on Mr. Mayor, let us not stop here and now, but rather let us have a fresh start at City Hall.
