On Thursday the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) hosted an HIV/AIDS Filming Session to aid in the removal of discrimination against persons with the virus in the ‘workplace environment’.
To a sizeable audience which included mostly employees directly attached to the entity, GRDB’s General Manager, Jagnarine Singh welcomed the attendees and media representatives, emphasising the need for such programmes since they play an important role in educating persons on vital issues surrounding the dreaded disease.
The general manager said the films will become an ongoing feature at the entity, noting that a special unit is set up to look at HIV/AIDS and it risks in the workplace.
The film began with the first scene depicting the crude treatment an infected employee received from another who was uneducated and ignorant on issues surrounding the disease.
As the film rolled on it displayed the crude, scornful treatment infected employees received at the hands of their colleagues many of whom had little or no knowledge on how the disease could be contracted.
At the end of each scene, there was a peer educator or HIV/AIDS counsellor in the movie who dealt with workplace issues and taught the uneducated characters the correct manner in which they must treat fellow employees infected with the deadly virus.
During the movies employees expressed shock at the actions of some movie characters that refused to touch, clean the offices of, or even come close to colleagues who were diagnosed with the disease.
In a brief address, GRDB’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Brushell Blackman said the showing of the movie and others to follow will aid in removing the discrimination that can ‘destroy workplace relations’ if it is ignored.
He indicated that after viewing the movie a special body that has been set up will develop strategies to ensure that Persons Living with HIV/AIDS at that entity do not suffer the treatment the characters in the movie were forced to endure at the hands of their workmates.
Blackman disclosed that at the recent Guyana Business Collation Against HIV/AIDS Awards Ceremony held at the Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel, it was the GRDB that received the award for being the organisation for making the most strides in empowering employees with knowledge surrounding HIV/AIDS.
The PRO added that the GRDB is raging a serious war against HIV/AIDS discrimination in the workplace and will not stop until this issue is vanquished.
