Authorities have seized quantities of illegal cigarettes and safety matches during operations in parts of the country recently.
According to the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), its inspectors conducted surveillance at shops and other retail outlets throughout the East Coast and East Bank of Demerara and Georgetown to ensure that all safety matches and cigarettes offered for sale to consumers comply with national standards.
“Based on information received by the GNBS on poor quality and inadequately labelled safety matches and cigarettes being sold on the market, inspections were conducted at approximately 800 business premises,” GNBS said in a statement yesterday.
Resulting from inspections, 141 boxes of Five Star matches, 700 boxes of Comet matches and 280 boxes of the Volcano brand safety matches were seized and removed, since they failed to comply with the required standards.
In addition, six cartons, seven packets and sticks of Silver Elephant cigarettes; 61 cartons and 11 packs of GT Smart, and five packets of BT cigarettes were seized and removed, since the items were also not in compliance with the requirements.
“The GNBS is concerned that importers and dealers are continuing to import and sell non-complying safety matches and cigarettes that can have an adverse impact on the health and safety of consumers, despite numerous efforts by the standards body to seize and remove these commodities from the market,” GNBS said.
In some cases, the labels on safety matches seized lacked key information, such as the name and address of the manufacturer, importer or distributor; the country of origin, and the cautionary warning statements, such as “Keep out of reach of children,” and information indicating precautions to be taken by users of the product.
“Further, previous tests conducted on some of these matches failed to meet inspection and test requirements.
With respect to cigarettes, the labels of cigarettes seized had key information, such as the name and address of manufacturers, missing.”
GNBS is warning consumers not to purchase these non-complying brands of cigarettes and safety matches.
Distributors, retailers and shopkeepers are urged to stop the sale of these products to consumers. Failure to conform will result in the continued seizure of the products.
