The man who was shot dead by Police ranks on Tuesday following a robbery has been identified as 36-year-old Dexter Chase, of Evan Phillips Park, Agricola, East Bank Demerara.
According to a Police source, the man was positively identified by relatives at the Georgetown Public Hospital mortuary yesterday.
Kaieteur News understands that a friend of the slain man called his relatives in West Ruimveldt to inform them of the incident. Reports are that, on the night of the incident, Chase’s friend made a call to an uncle.
However, it was only yesterday, when relatives visited the hospital’s mortuary, that they were able to confirm that the slain gunman was indeed Chase.
Reports are that Chase lived alone in Agricola, but from time to time a woman would visit the home. When Kaieteur News visited the man’s home there was no one there. However, neighbours said they had heard of the incident, which came as a shock to them.
“This thing is a shock to everybody; I never knew he was that kind of a person. I know he alone use to live in the house since he whole family gone out the country,” one neighbour said.
In the meantime, Chase’s accomplice, whom investigators say lives at Punt Trench Dam, was up to press time yesterday still in Police custody assisting with investigations. Sources said charges are to be laid shortly.
On Tuesday, Chase and another man pounced on John Street, Werk-en-Rust businessman George Ramsarran, relieving him of $95,000 in cash, one wrist watch and one gold band, then tying him up.
However, during their escape bid, the gunmen were involved in a shoot-out with the Police, which resulted in Chase being fatally shot.
