Less than a month after he was deported from the United States of America, former national basketball executive Raffel Douglas is back in local Police custody.
Douglas was arrested yesterday on a warrant issued by a West Demerara magistrate a few years ago.
Kaieteur News understands that the warrant had been issued after Douglas had failed to show up in court to answer a charge of illegal possession of a firearm.
A senior Police official said that Douglas will be taken before the court today.
The official could not say why Douglas was not detained and taken to court immediately after he returned to Guyana.
A few weeks ago, Douglas was released from a United States prison after a plea bargain he made with prosecutors in a drug trafficking matter.
Douglas had fled Guyana after the US warrant was issued for his arrest. He was subsequently held in Trinidad and Tobago, where he was handed over to US Drug Enforcement Agency officials.
He was transported to the US, where he was charged with several counts of conspiring to import cocaine. Several of the charges were dropped. In the end, Douglas pleaded guilty to a telephone charge of conspiring with a drug trafficker.
Douglas, in an interview with this newspaper after his return to Guyana, emphasised that he was no snitch, but just wanted to return to his homeland.
