Persons are currently being interviewed to fill the position of Head of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU).
These persons are both from within and outside of CANU, Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee, disclosed on Wednesday.
According to Rohee, should the person selected not have been subjected to a polygraph test previously, then that person will be in the next round of polygraphing to be done in six months’ time.
The Home Affairs Minister said that what is desirable in CANU is ‘cleanliness.’
“Collusion, corruption and connivance – the so-called three ‘C’s’ will be stamped out,” he said.
Just under two months ago, President Bharrat Jagdeo had confirmed that some Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) ranks will be fired, since they failed to past a polygraph test.
The ranks were subjected to polygraph tests as part of attempt to determine the integrity of the ranks within that unit.
Several ranks from within the unit were subsequently fired, despite their reported innocence.
The President said his move to have the ranks subjected to polygraph tests was a means of ensuring that the unit can be relied on to fight drug trafficking in Guyana.
He noted that in order to expand the unit, he wants to ensure that there is honesty within the body.
