The suspect in the Mora Point murder/arson, 47-year-old Desmond Laulys, of Mora Camp, Bartica/Potaro Trail, died yesterday.
Laulys had reportedly ingested a toxic substance after beating, chopping and tying up his reputed wife, Cynthia Andrews, before setting fire to the house with the woman inside. The incident occurred on Monday.
Laulys, when apprehended by Police ranks soon after, announced that he had ingested the poisonous substance.
According to a press release from the Guyana Police Force, Laulys was medically treated and then discharged from the Bartica Hospital at approximately 09:20 hours on Tuesday. He was then placed in a separate cell in the lock-ups at the Bartica Police Station, and was visited every thirty minutes.
At approximately 18:15 hours on Tuesday, Laulys began to complain of feeling unwell. He was subsequently taken back to the Bartica Hospital, and treated again before being sent back to the lock-ups, at about 21:00 hours.
Yesterday afternoon, at approximately 13:00 hours, during a routine visit to the lock-ups, Police ranks reportedly found Laulys on the floor frothing from the mouth. He was rushed to the Bartica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Police have indicated that they are awaiting a post mortem report.
