Everest Hikers men stormed to a convincing 5-2 victory over the GCC, while the GCC Tigers however got the better of the Everest ladies by 3-2 as both teams repeated their victorious performances at the 2007 Diamond Mineral Festival, the last staged indoor tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
As the tournament had to be condensed to finish on Saturday due to an immediate decision to refurbish the Sports Hall on Sunday, several games had to be cancelled leaving just the finals to be played one day early.
The Hikers men picked up right where they left off in their 7-3 pool round victory over GCC by scoring a pair of goals in the opening two minutes in what seemed destined to be a one-sided final.
Jerry Bell was first on the scoreboard through a penalty corner while Robert France scored in his typical poachers fashion by sweeping in a pin-point pass from Timothy McIntosh.
GCC managed to hold their nerve however and gathered composure as the half wore on, managing to pull one back two minutes later through an Alan Fernandes field goal.
Supporters were treated to an end-to-end competitive match throughout the half but the Hikers would be the next on the score sheet with the second from France just before the halftime buzzer to give his team the 3-1 lead.
The hard-fought second half would see the Hikers extend their lead to 3 through Randy Hope after some fine goalkeeping on both ends by Azad DeAbreu for the Hikers and Gregory Garraway for GCC.
In the dying minutes, GCC would pull Garraway in lieu of having an extra field player and the gamble almost paid off as Orlando Semple slammed home his first for the match.
Hikers would seal the deal in the final minute of play with a second from Hope however to give Everest the well-deserved 5-2 victory.
The ladies final clash between the GCC Tigers and the Everest Hikers was the usual crowd-pleaser as the match went down to the wire before the Tigers could pull off the 3-2 victory.
The Tigers would score twice through Brennette Gordon and Tricia Fiedtkou before the Hikers could get on the board through an Avonda James tip-in. Gordon would flick home a second in the 16th minute but Amanda Boodlall kept Everest in contention by scoring just before the half to leave the halftime score at 3-2.
Each side would manage one more in the second half as Gordon secured her hat-trick in the 22nd minute for the Tigers while Boodlall would score in the 32nd in Hikers losing effort, leaving the score at 4-3 in favour of the GCC Tigers.
On the previous day, the Everest Hikers men registered were in fine form to pull off the 15-3 victory over the Western dragons and the 7-3 victory over eventual finalists GCC ‘A’.
In the other men’s clash, Old Fort ‘A’ defeated the Carib Degenerates 9-3. In the lone female match of the evening, the GCC Spartans drew 1-1 with eventual finalists Everest Hikers.
