Even though Guyana will not be eligible to participate in this year’s Caribbean Volleyball Championships, President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) Lenox Shuffler has promised to pull out all the stops to get the team to play a few exhibition games against the teams scheduled to participate in the event in Barbados.
Shuffler speaking with Kaieteur Sport recently said that because Guyana was not originally part of the Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA), they recently received information that they would not be part of the official competition, but instead could come to Barbados to play warm-up matches against teams who are part of the competition.
“Because we had already chosen a national squad to prepare for the championships, the boys would’ve been extremely disappointed not make a tour so the executive made a decision to get some form of match play for them and Barbados subsequently gave us permission to compete against some of the teams,” Shuffler revealed.
“I feel that because the players had made a huge sacrifice and to hear the disappointing news of not being able to compete at the Caribbean Championships, we felt compelled to reward them with a tour.”
Shuffler said that because Guyana has recently been given permission to re-enter the CAZOVA by the South American Volleyball Federation (CSV) which they were a part of, they now have to secure a ranking to be able to compete in the region, so there is a certain amount of urgency to obtain such.
“We are trying to place ourselves in a position to participate at next year’s inaugural Caribbean Games, but in order for us to qualify we have to improve our ranking,” Shuffler said.
The GVF President issued a call to the business community to come forward and offer their support to the team as they attempt to make the trip.
“We need a further $600,000 to reach our projected target of $1.5 million.
The team is tentatively set to depart on July 9.
