Guyana yesterday officially welcomed the services of another airline with Skyservice’s inaugural flight which comes in the midst of the peak season and Carifesta X.
A warm welcome awaited the passengers and crew, compliments of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), which hosted a ‘welcome’ at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
Snacks and drinks were given to the passengers, while the crew members received souvenirs portraying a little of Guyana’s culture, even as they were being serenaded by steel pan music.
Skyservice is providing a non-stop flight from Toronto to Georgetown, then Georgetown to Toronto, every Tuesday during the peak season.
The plane, a Boeing 757, has the capacity to carry 215 passengers economy class. Yesterday’s flight brought in 203 persons.
The services of this airline will add to the already existing services of Zoom and Caribbean Airlines which offer flights to and from Toronto, Canada.
Director of GTA, Indranauth Haralsingh, said that this charter service is welcome. “They are a welcome addition to this leg from Toronto,” Haralsingh said.
He also said that he believes this addition will boost arrivals to Guyana, since there are a lot of Guyanese living in Canada.
According to Haralsingh, Skyservice has very competitive rates, which are at the time lower than those offered by Caribbean Airlines and Zoom Airlines.
He noted that this is happening at a very good time, since the airline will be flying for a two-month period ending on September 2. That is approximately 10 flights with the schedule of bringing in 2,150 passengers. This, he added, is very opportune for Carifesta.
Captain Tom Kluge told the media that the flight and the passengers were wonderful, and that the company looks forward to serving Guyana.
The Honorary Consul General of Canada, Danny Doobay, was a passenger on yesterday’s flight, and he told reporters that he is happy to be able to board a flight in Canada and arrive in Guyana without first having to make a stop somewhere else.
He added that the flight was sold out a few days ahead of schedule. According to him, there is a lack of capacity in Canada during the summer. He also pointed out that the flight was very full, probably because people took full advantage of the competitive rates. Their rates are between US$500 and $700.
Doobay also said that the flight will be quite beneficial during Carifesta. He stated that, later in this month, the Canada-based Guyanese will be holding a fundraising event for participants coming to Guyana for Carifesta.
According to him, they are also planning a familiarisation trip in October or November for a group of journalists and tour operators to come to Guyana and see our tourism product.
Travelspan, acting on behalf of Titantours, will be the general sales agent for Skyservice, which will allow passengers a baggage allowance of two pieces totalling 30 kilograms each, and a carry-on of 10 lbs.
Founded in 1986, Skyservice is a Canadian aviation enterprise servicing the needs of Canadian travellers and the business aviation community. Skyservice operates Canada’s premier commercial charter airline, top fixed base operations, and a leading worldwide air ambulance service.
Over the past few months, Tourism Minister Manniram Prashad met with several airline operators to discuss various prospects for boosting tourism.
Guyana only recently welcomed the world’s largest airline, Delta, and several others.
