Confident team depart for Barbados on Wednesday
By Sean Devers
The final day of the final practice match for the Guyana under-19 cricket team which will defend its Three-Day title in Barbados from July 4 was washed out yesterday at the Guyana National Stadium by rain.
The players, who were encamped in the Capitol City for the last two weeks, returned to their respective homes yesterday and will assemble at the Guyana Cricket Board’s Hostel in Georgetown on Tuesday to travel to Barbados the next day.
With five members back from last year’s team which won Guyana’s 12th regional three-day youth title in St Kitts, the Guyanese are confident of doing well although Coach Hubern Evans is a bit concerned that most of the batsmen did not show enough discipline in the practice matches and trials.
Manager Alvin Johnson says that in recent times their was clearly an indication before the team left that either the bowling or batting departments was the strength and feels that the team is more balanced this year.
While Johnson feels the bowling could be perceived as the team’s strong area he said that the batsmen selected this year have plenty of talent and expect much from all of them.
Seon Hetmyer, in his second year at this level, should lead the batting while Vice Captain and debutant Royan Fredericks and all-rounder Jonathan Foo, also in his second year at regional under-19 level, are expected to produce with the bat.
Guyana hunt their third hat-trick of tittles after winning an unprecedented six in two from 1992-1996. Guyana, under West Indies under-19 Vice Skipper Steven Jacobs recaptured the title in 2006 at home for the first time since 1997 and successfully defended it last year in St Kitts.
The team will be hosted at a special farewell dinner by the Guyana Cricket Board on Tuesday.
