The Guyana Police Force is refuting claims made by the relatives of battered woman Simone Fiedtkou, which stated that the chopping attack by her lover could have been avoided had the Police taken more strident action.
Simone Fiedtkou, of Seventh Avenue, Bartica, was severely chopped about the body on June 15 last, allegedly by her reputed husband, Duncan Alleyne, called ‘Wikki Wikki.’
An article carried by this newspaper on the incident quoted Fiedtkou’s family members as saying that the 31- year-old woman had suffered years of abuse from Alleyne, and numerous reports were made to the Police, but little was done about it.
They said that the Police would usually claim that it is a ‘husband and wife situation’ and that they do not want to get involved.
The relatives had also said that the latest incident could have been avoided had the Police taken more strident actions against previous reports made by the injured woman.
However, the Police, in a release on Friday, stated that while there were matters reported by Simone Fiedtkou against Duncan Alleyne, there were also reports made against her. All those reports were investigated, and charges were laid where necessary, the Police said.
The release stated that a check of the records revealed that Simone Fiedtkou had made two reports at the Bartica Police Station against Duncan Alleyne, and one was made against her.
According to the Police, a report was received against Simone Fiedtkou that, in November 2003, she went to the Lot 1, First Avenue, Bartica home of Onika Marslow, who also has a child with Alleyne.
An argument ensured, during which she bit off a piece of Marslow’s ear. Fiedtkou was charged in February 2004 for inflicting grievous bodily harm.
In the latter part of last year, Fiedtkou was found guilty and fined $15,000 by Magistrate Fazil Azeez.
The release further stated that, in June 2007, Fiedtkou went to the Bartica Police Station and reported that she was sitting with friends on the corner of Seventh Avenue and Second Street, in Bartica, when Duncan Alleyne appeared and abused her.
An argument ensued between them, and he dealt her several cuffs to her face and about her body.
Alleyne was arrested and admitted to beating her, and he was placed in custody. He was subsequently released on $10,000 cash bail. According to the Police, Fiedtkou did not give a statement in that matter and, as a result, no charge was laid. The release added that, on March 28 last, Fiedtkou reported that Alleyne had thrown away her cell phone the previous day.
She requested that a warning be given to him, and this was done the same day, according to the Police.
Resulting from investigations conducted into the chopping incident on Sunday, June 15, the Police said, on Wednesday June 18, Duncan Alleyne was charged with attempting to murder Simone Fiedtkou.
He appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and was remanded to prison.
The case has been postponed to July 9, at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
