DEAR EDITOR,
Stabroek News’ cartoonist Paul Harris says that Barack Obama will be the first “black man” to be president of the United States.

On what criterion is Mr. Harris judging Mr. Obama to be “black”? I believe that Mr. Obama’s mother was white (his father was a black African).

Mr. Obama was raised by his white grandparents to whom he gives credit for making him the man he is today.

The interesting question is why does Mr. Harris label a man, who is genetically half-white, a “black-man”? Why, in Mr. Harris’ mind, isn’t Mr. Obama a “white man”?

In an unrelated issue, Al Haj Mujtaba Nasir, the General Secretary of CIOG writes to the SN telling us that Islam does not tolerate homosexuality.

Wow, that’s great news! It’s music to the ears of thousands of maimed and orphaned Muslim children in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The children now suffering in the West Bank and Gaza are relieved of their deathly afflictions knowing that Allah does not condone same-sex love.

How happy and secure in their faith this must make them! Now, can Mr. Nasir tell us how Islam regards women?
Why must they wear a bee-hive looking Burkha? Why can’t women drive cars and so on?

The Somali-born member of the Dutch parliament, Ayaan Hirsi Ali gives us a good insight on women in her book “Infidel”. Ms. Hirsi was subjected to genital mutilation and later forced into marriage as part of her Islamic faith.

In reviewing Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s book the Washington Post said: “The mistreatment of women is not an incidental problem in the Muslim world. . . Rather, she [Ali] believes that the enslavement of women lies at the heart of all of the most fanatical interpretations of Islam, creating ‘a culture that generates more backwardness with every generation.”

I am now finishing another book, “Why I Am Not a Muslim” by Ibn Warraq. Readers should check it out on Amazon.com where excerpts are freely available.

As it relates to this issue, Mr. Nasir quotes Quranic text to tell us that God destroys homosexuals, a technique Ibn Warraq knows quite well.

He says to us that “Islam relies on blind faith and the uncritical acceptance of text on which the religion is based.”

So the big question now is this: Is Mr. Nasir saying that the archaic rules of Islamists or Sharia law should be applied to a modern and civilized Western society?

Mr. Roger Williams, always in the thick of any homosexual writing, praised the Islamist interpretations which condemns homosexuals to death. He takes the laughable view that the Islamic rules are “fact-based evidence”.

Williams should take the time to find out what such “evidence” would do to someone who holds his Judeo-Christian beliefs. Hey, as far as the Islamists are concerned what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.
