Despite the efforts of their respective ‘B’ sides, the GCC, Everest and Old Fort ‘A’ teams all chalked up victories on a night that pitted the ‘A’ sides against ‘B’ sides of their respective clubs.
The aggressive GCC ‘B’ made the boldest effort of the underdogs by taking a 1-0 lead into half time with a goal by Raphael DeGroot.
The GCC ‘A’ side evened the score just after the half however and then piled on the pressure for most of the second half.
Despite managing to maintain the even scoreline until 5 minutes from fulltime, the GCC ‘B’s airtight defence eventually crumbled to the penalty corner tactics of their senior counterparts and let in three more to leave the final score at 4-1. Dwayne Scott, Alan Fernandes, Peter DeGroot and Kevin Spencer were goalscorers for the victors.
Everest ‘A’ featuring a reduced strength side with the notable absence of nationals Timothy McIntosh and Alex Gouveia were still able to make light work of their ‘B’ team with a 12-6 victory.
Randy Hope led the scores with 5 goals for Everest ‘A’, Azad DeAbreu with 3, Devin Munroe, 2 and Jerry Bell and Robert France managing one a piece. Andrew Stuart scored a hat-trick for the ‘B’ team with Shaquille Assanah, Leroy Brown and Renrick Evely scoring one each.
Aderemi Simon led the scores as he poured in 4 goals for Old Fort ‘A’ in their resounding 11-0 victory over Old Fort ‘B’. Adrian Brandt added a hat-trick, Robert Hussein a double and Chris Low-Koan and John Abrams one each.
Police and the Carib Degenerates played to a draw in what may have been the first local indoor hockey men’s match in several years that failed to produce any goals.
In the lone ladies match of the evening, the GCC Tigers made an emphatic statement in their opening game by defeating their junior counterparts the GCC Spartans by 5-0.
Tiffany Solomon was first on the score sheet through a penalty corner in the 7th minute, while Shebiki Baptiste and Brennette Gordon added one each from the field before the half expired.
The Spartans had a few opportunities score which were foiled by Natalie Hing in goal but the game sat comfortably in the hands of the Tigers throughout the duration and Captain Sonia Jardine would seal the deal with a double in the second half to take the team tally to 5.
GCC ‘A’ has wrested the men’s points lead from clubmates GCC ‘B’ with 9 points from 3 matches, while Everest ‘A’ sits in second with 7 points from 3 matches and GCC ‘B’ relegated to third with their first loss of the tournament and on 7 points from 4 matches.
Old Fort ‘A’ have 6 points from 3 matches, Carib Degenerates 4, Western Dragons 3, Police 1 and Everest ‘B’ and Old Fort ‘B’ remain without points.
In the ladies competition the GCC Tigers and Everest Hikers are tied on 3 points each while the GCC Spartans have failed to secure any points.
