A fire of unknown origin razed a house in Haslington, East Coast Demerara, shortly after noon yesterday, leaving two families homeless.
Eleven persons had lived in the building but at the time of the fire, there were only two at home, Emanuel Vanbuckley, 16, and his sister, who occupied the upper flat of the house. The Edghill family resided in the lower flat.
Initial reports suggest that the fire appeared to have started in one of the bedrooms in the lower flat. The possibility of it being electrical in origin has been ruled out, as the power supply to the building was cut off some time before.
Denis Edghill, an occupant of the lower flat, explained that when he heard of the fire he rushed back to Haslington, only to find that the house had already collapsed. He arrived on the scene at approximately 15:30 hours.
Emanuel Vanbuckley explained that at around 14:30 hours his sister informed that there was smoke coming from the downstairs bedroom.
The young man said that he immediately threw two buckets of water from the upstairs of the house with the hope of extinguishing the fire but his attempts proved futile.
Residents of the area who had also been alerted to the fire formed a bucket brigade, doing their best to attempt to extinguish the fire.
Some of the residents lamented that the fire brigade in Enmore was summoned when the fire was still in its infancy but it did not respond promptly.
“If the Fire Service from Enmore had responded when or just after it was called the upper portion of the building could have been saved,” said one resident.
