The Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) received a donation of $100,000 from Western Union Remittance Services for their Saturday, July 5 ‘Judgement Day’ Card during a simple presentation ceremony which was held at the Company’s Head Office on Water Street yesterday.
Making the presentation to GBBC’s Representative Trevor Arno on behalf of the entity was Marketing Assistant Odetta Noel, who said that the donation was the completion of a commitment made to the Board sometime ago.
Arno in his response told the media that their association with Western Union started since last year when the Board staged their five-fight card to arrive at champions to fill a number of vacant divisions and from that time they had promised to lend their support for future endeavours.
“It started last year when they contributed to procuring the belts and we’ve always been grateful for their support,” Arno stated.
The card will feature former European champion Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman, who challenges local middleweight champion ‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton for the national title over 12 rounds.
In the main supporting bout, female heavyweight champion Pamela London puts her WBC International belt on the line against Veronica Blackman in an 8-round contest, while the other match-ups will see local boy Michael Demattus take on Trinidad and Tobago-based Guyanese Joel McRae in 6-round engagement; Shelly Gibson square-off against another T&T-based Guyanese Andrea Duncan over 4 rounds and Charlton Skeete do battle with Cecil Smith also over 4 rounds.
Among the other sponsors who’ve already come forward with their support include Courts, GT&T Cellink Plus, Banks DIH and Ansa McAl.
Tickets for the bout are expected to go on sale this weekend at several outlets around the city. Tickets cost $2,200 for Ringside, while stands carry a $1,200 tab. Tickets at the gate however attract a higher price, $2,500 and $1,500 respectively.
