Anna Catherina Islamic Complex (ACIC) reigned supreme as its contestants dominated at this year’s National Qaseeda Competition (Muslim Songs in praise of Prophet Muhammad (SAS) held last Sunday at the Anna Catherina Islamic complex on the West Coast of Demerara.
ACIC’s Faizul Bacchus sang his way into the hearts of the judges and the crowd, as he carted away the first place in the Senior Male Category while in the Female Senior Category, Shameza Baksh, took the top position. Melissa Rupai, also of ACIC, took the Junior Female title with Al Ansar Abdul copping the Junior Male title.
Bacchus, overcame the stiff competition from Mohamed Reaz Razack of ACIC (2nd Place) and Hassan Bacchus of Mon Repos (3rd Place) and showed that he will be staking a strong challenge for the top position at the International Qaseeda Mehfil to be staged in Guyana in October. Husain B. Sakur came in fourth at the event which benefited from judging of an exceptional high standard, led by Al Haj Mohamed Shakoor of Venezuela and Mohamed Ibrahim of Suriname.
A feature of the events held by the Muslim Youth League of Guyana, The Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman and the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex was the participation of two small children in the Female Junior Category. Aleeda Dos Santos and Naseeba Nabbi, ages 4 years and 5 years, respectively, who thoroughly impressed the judges and audience to secure two special prizes.
Anasha Khan, Farzana Persaud and Naseba Nabi claimed 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions respectively in the Female Junior Category while Shairoon Latiff, Fareda Nabbi and Bibi Nazmoon Khan came in 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively in the Female Senior Category.
The Competition was held to determine persons from Guyana to participate in the International Qaseeda Mehfil to be hosted in Guyana in October this year. Hundreds of persons from around the country converged on the spacious and picturesque Anna Catherina Islamic Complex to witness a competition of top class singing of songs in praise of the Holy Prophet (SAS).
The program commenced at 10.00hrs with over 50 contestants in the various categories involved. According to the Master of Ceremonies, Shabir Hussain, this event has been promoted by the MYL for many years.
The International Mehfil will have contestants from Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, Canada, United States of America, Holland, Pakistan, India and England.
Three awards were given to the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex, Mon Repos Sunnatul Jamaat and Enmore Estate Sunnatul Jamaat for their consistent support and promotion of Qaseeda Singing.
