Three men have been remanded to prison after they appeared in court to answer charges following a shooting incident that left two of them nursing gunshot wounds.
First to appear was 21-year-old Anthony Taylor, of Albouystown, who was charged with discharging a loaded firearm and with felonious wounding.
Both charges were indictable and Taylor was not required to plead.
It is alleged that on June 20 last, at James and Cooper Streets, Albouystown, without lawful authority, Taylor discharged a loaded firearm at Troy Bishop with intent to maim, disfigure or disable him.
It is also alleged that on the same day, with intent to maim, disfigure or disable, he feloniously wounded Troy Bishop. The court was told that three men were involved in the shooting incident in Albouystown.
After the charge was read to the accused, Police Prosecutor Deneashwar Nauth asked the magistrate to refuse bail. Nauth asked that the court take into consideration the prevalence of gun crimes in today’s society. Taylor is expected to make his next court appearance on July 11.
The two other men were remanded to prison on a similar firearm charge. Troy Bishop and Sherwin Monker allegedly discharged a loaded firearm at Anthony Taylor on June 20 last, with intent to maim, disfigure or disable him.
It is also alleged that the duo feloniously wounded Anthony Taylor.
Both charges are indictable, and the men were not required to plead.
Monker was represented by defence counsel Adrian Thompson, who, in a bail application for his client, told the court that the discharging a loaded firearm charge against his client was trumped up.
He told the court that investigators swabbed his client’s hands for gun powder residue. That test, Thompson said, proved negative.
He argued that, given the charge, he would have expected Taylor to be brought into the court room on a stretcher. However, earlier in the day, Taylor walked into the court room without any assistance and any sign of being seriously injured.
Bishop, in his own defence, told the court that, on the day in question, he was just passing in the area when he saw a fight and was shot.
Police Prosecutor Deneashwar Nauth asked that bail be refused. Magistrate Octive-Hamilton remanded both men; they also are expected to make their next court appearance on July 11.
