Darin is one of many children currently attending the Speech Clinic at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. Speech and Language Therapy is one of the several rehabilitation services available to both children and adults throughout Guyana.
Darin is now 4 ½ years old and started Speech and Language Therapy last year June after a referral was made by Audiologist Dr. Ruth Quaicoe.
At about two years old, Darin’s parents started to notice that he was not as chatty as other children of a similar age. Although he understood what was said to him he did not speak more than two words at a time. They also noticed that Darin was extremely energetic and hyperactive.
After much research Darin’s parents decided that the child needed to have a medical evaluation to determine if he was suffering from any underlying medical condition.
After numerous visits to various specialists available locally it was agreed that Darin suffered from Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, or A.D.H.D.
Since Speech and Language Therapy commenced in 2007, Darin has overcome many challenges with his attention deficit.
Last September, he was enrolled in the nursery department at Mae’s School and with Speech and Language Therapy started to progress to the state that he was able to settle in class, speak in sentences, identify words, colours and write.
During his weekly Speech and Language Therapy sessions Darin completes different activities such as matching pictures to words, card and number games and computer based exercises.
He is computer literate and is able at four years old to use the internet to browse children’s websites and successfully do numerous activities.
The work of the Rehabilitation Assistant and VSO Speech and Language Therapist is complimented by Darin’s parents who take activities home and help reinforce the skills that Darin needs to further support his development.
Gary and Kendrea, the parents, reported that helping their son is both continuous and fun and each day they are seeing positive improvements in both his attentiveness and his vocabulary.
Initially, like many people, they were unaware of the existence of Speech and Language Therapy, which is available free of charge to both children and adults experiencing communication difficulties.
The Speech and language therapist and rehabilitation assistants are trained to identify, assess and treat all kinds of communication disorders in both children and adults, for example; speech and language delay, stuttering, voice disorders as well as patients who have difficulty with thinking that affects their ability to communicate.
