Guyana’s Middleweight Boxing champion ‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton will put his National title on the line against Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman in the feature bout at the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) July 5 Professional card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) in the nation’s Capitol.
This is the first professional card in Guyana since last October and Dalton, who has a record of 24 fights, 16 wins, seven defeats and a draw since making his professional debut against Ron Robin in 1997, has won 11 of his battles by way of knock-out and a pulsating contest is anticipated as the 37-year-old Eastman aim to improve his record of 48 fights, 42 wins and six losses with 35 knock-outs under his belt.
Eastman, who turned Professional with a first round knock-out against John Rice in March 1994, campaigned for much of his career in London and the Berbician will know that time is ticking away from him as he hopes to dethrone Dalton in the 12-round contest.
Guyana’s Women’s heavyweight champion Pamela London will oppose Veronica Blackman over eight rounds for the WBC International title.
According to the GBBC, the winner of this fight could be in line to fight USA’s Veronica Ward for the World title. WBC representative Guyanese Wilf Boodhoo will be in his homeland to witness the fights.
Michael Demattus take on Joel McRae in an six-round Middleweight fixture, Shelly Gibson battle Andrea Duncan in a Female heavyweight bout over four rounds and Cecil Smith oppose Charlton Skeete in the 122 pounds division in a four-round clash in the supporting bouts of the 34-round card.
The GBBC says the Board had to take the initiative and stage this card since none of the local promoters have shown any interest in putting on a card.
It was also disclosed that Grace Kennedy Remittance Service (Guyana) Ltd, local agent for Western Union in Guyana will provide financial support for the card.
The aim of the GBBC is to return quality fights to Guyana and Western Union is enthusiastic about supporting such a venture.
The company has been consistent in its efforts to support sports on the whole and Marketing Manager of the company Jennifer Cipriani-Nelson said her company believes that sports encourages and promotes discipline.
“Our focal interest in sports has been on youths since this is the crucial stage for development of an individual.
Over the past six years Guyana has produced a number of World Boxing champions.”
The presentation of the cheque to the GBBC is set for today at the company’s Water Street Head Office.
