Magistrate Gordon Gilhuys yesterday ordered that a Police sergeant, #12081 Gravesande, be held in custody until he has been served with an arrest warrant.
Magistrate Gilhuys summoned reporters covering the court beat and announced that the Police have no regard for the court.
Gilhuys contended that, on May 2, he had issued a warrant for Sgt Gravesande to appear in court, but up to yesterday the warrant had not been served.
The Police sergeant was supposed to have appeared in court in relation to a matter involving Kevin Maloney, called ‘Fishy,’ who has been charged with unlawful possession of arms and ammunition. According to the magistrate, Gravesande appeared in his court yesterday to testify in another matter, and Gilhuys alerted the prosecutor that he had issued a warrant.
However, the Police did not have the warrant with them and could not locate it at the time.
Magistrate Gilhuys added that he was ready to come off the bench at 12:15hours and the Police had still not executed the warrant.
This, he added, shows that the Police have no regard for the court, and he therefore ordered that Gravesande remain in custody until the warrant was executed.
