The Joint Services say that the killing of the eight miners at Lindo Valley, Berbice River was committed by a gang of gunmen who have eluded them.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Joint Services denied that the act was carried out by the security forces.
“The Joint Services are vigorously investigating the killing of the eight men based on information received from reliable sources which indicate that this heinous and bastardly (sic) act was committed by criminal elements we are actively pursuing,” the statement said.
The statement disclosed that a team which included ranks from the Police Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting the investigations.
The Joint Services described as unimaginable and unthinkable assertions that the eight miners were killed by the security forces.
A news article which dealt with the discovery of eight burnt bodies at a mining camp at Lindo Creek, Berbice River on Saturday last stated that, “Some relatives of the men are adamant it was the work of the security forces”.
It went on to state that, “The camp owner, Arokium (George), maintained last night that he believed that the army was responsible for the attack and that it could not be Rawlins. I think that the army did it; all the evidence points to the army.
“The Joint Services wish to unequivocally deny these assertions,” a statement from the security forces said yesterday.
According to the Joint Services, the ranks are highly and specially trained and experienced in the execution of their duties, whether in urban or rural terrain.
Additionally, the security forces say, the very conduct of its operations would not allow for the commission of such actions.
“While we understand the state of mind of Mr. Arokium, having lost his family members in this manner, it is unproductive to directly accuse the Joint Services without any shred of evidence and based solely on speculation.”
The Joint Services wish to advise all concerned that such actions do not contribute to a wholesome security environment, and issue a call to them to desist from speculations and accusations.
“We need to be united in the fight against crime,” the Joint Services stated.
“The Joint Services wish to extend sincere condolences to the relatives, friends and employees of Mr. Arokium and the relatives and friends of the victims at this time of their bereavement.”
