DEAR EDITOR,
I refer to the article (SN June 22, 2008) captioned, “Physics falling off time tables”.
I would like to categorically state that, if it was not for Physics, my capacity to survive in this world would have been severely stymied.
Physics gave me the capacity to logically analyse any problem (and I mean any problem) that I face with a view to finding a workable solution.
To not provide the next generation of Guyanese students access to Physics is, at minimum, a dereliction of duty by the education system.
Everywhere I travel these days, be it the US, the UK, India, even the Middle East, I have found Guyanese serving the world at fairly technical levels, and they all remember the man called “Bulby” (the famous Mr. Trotz), who taught us A Level Physics lessons, and Mr. Inshanally, who was the de-facto Physics Czar at Queen’s College.
I am forever grateful to these men for their input into my life; and wherever they are, I express my heartfelt gratitude to them. Now, as the Physics kicks in, let’s look at the solutions.
India, or China, or Russia, or Iran, these countries still have the best physicists in the world, and these countries are very friendly to Guyana.
Can we not ask Russia, China, India or Iran to send a dozen or two English-speaking Physics teachers to Guyana, and they could even re-open the Physics Department at the University of Guyana.
As a follow-up suggestion, what about the Cuban scholarship? Can we not reserve a dozen spaces for those interested in pursuing Physics at the higher level?
A country without Physics in its blood can never raise its game to the next level, and will be condemned to poverty. And this is the gravity of this situation.
The Hon. Minister of Education blames the problem on a lack of teachers, but that is not enough.
Being as competent as he is, he must put a plan in place to deliver result on this problem soonest.
Come on, Mr. Minister; this inadequacy can lead to a further decay in our society. Physics allow us to think logically, and not be led like sheep.
How many more of our youngsters will be led like sheep by the likes of “Fine Man” and his political masters?
